Technologically Challenged

I think my laptop has finally had enough of me. Granted I am not its first owner, as this was previously my friend’s laptop, but I think after I made it speak Korean it decided it wanted to die. Between all the blogging, paper writing, pdf opening, and internet surfing I do, it no longer wants to be my friend. At first I thought it was having a bad day, but the bad day has turned into a week, and now a month. It randomly shuts down on me. Sometimes it does not allow the internet to work. Sometimes it…

Why Children Are Not Rodents

Why Children Are Not Rodents

When you have small children along with pets running around your house, it is tempting to group them together. Especially for the following reasons: They are both cute and cuddly. Just like your cats, your kids will make loud, shriek like noises when they want food or drink. You have to change diapers and litter on a regular basis. Toys for small children bare an uncanny resemblance to doggy toys. And my son loves playing with the little catnip mice that have bells inside. Your children may be biters. Once your children get teeth, early on they look a…

The Things We Do To Torture Our Siblings

The Things We Do To Torture Our Siblings

Growing up, I was almost 9 years older than my younger sister. Throughout my mom’s pregnancy, I would be asked if I rather have a sibling or a puppy. I chose a puppy every time. But alas, I got a little screaming new sister. I wasn’t thrilled, seeing how I was an only child for nine years but when she got older, I thought it was pretty cool. I was quite the mentor and would teach her important life lessons. Like how awesome Duran Duran was or how I would play “Sweet Child O’ Mine” over and over and she…

Tricare Can Suck It

*I wrote this last month and I’m finally done with the treatments. So, I’ve been doing the radiation therapy and oy vey, I’ve been so wiped out. The long commute doesn’t make it any better. In really disappointing news, I haven’t come across any radioactive bunnies during my treatment. Such a bummer. One really glaring realization is that the hospital I’m going to is exceptional. If you don’t know already, I’m a Navy wife with the crappiest insurance. Yes, the insurance is for the most part free but you get what you pay for. I’ll tell you right now, it’s a…

Safe Haven

Safe Haven

In case you need a reminder, Safe Haven is being released this week. I’ll be honest, I’m not really a chick flick kind of girl. Except for The Notebook… because of Ryan Gosling. I mean HELLO, Ryan! Yeah, my favorite Nicholas Sparks movie…. EVER. In August, Relativity Media and Universal sent me to Southport, North Carolina to do a set visit and interview author Nicholas Sparks. I also met Josh Duhamel (hotter in person which doesn’t seem possible), and Julianne Hough (who is such a cutie). It was my first time doing anything like this and I never would have…

My Version of Cleopatra

My Version of Cleopatra

Does anyone remember Cleopatra? I used to watch that movie with my mother when I was young, and I got to thinking about it today. I have always loved Elizabeth Taylor. I think she was extraordinarily beautiful and talented. But I remember a particular scene in the movie when she has herself rolled up in a rug to be presented to Caesar. As he unfurls the rug she gracefully rolls out at his feet and strikes a seductive pose. It was elegant and artistic. As a little girl I fantasied one day doing that. I could never…

I Hope You Dance

I had two “father figures” when I was a kid; my biological father that I didn’t meet until I was 9 years old and my former stepfather who my mom married when I was about 7. To put it bluntly, I would have been better off without the 2 I had. It can be so hard, even at this age, to not be able to have a dad to reach out to. My biggest dream as a child… besides a pony…. was just one dance with either father. Maybe it’s a girl thing but that still gets to me. Just once…

An Itch I Can’t Seem To Scratch

30-something-itch

I’ve been feeling at a stand still lately. I’ve also been having this nagging feeling that I’ve forgotten something. I’m in my 30′s, and it seems like time is going by at lightening speed. Add a kid to the mix and most of the time I don’t even know what day it is. I do however remember the days when the hummingbird is in preschool since I’m known to count down the hours when things are really hectic and I need a mama break. When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait to be a grown up and do whatever…

Candy Flavored Vodka

Candy flavored vodka? Oh, yeah! Bring it on! I’ve seen this around for a while but didn’t try it out for myself until a few months ago. When my husband came home and saw all the mason jars I had, he looked confused. “You’re doing some canning?!” he said. When translated, it means “Where in the hell is my wife and what have you done with her?” When I told him the only canning I’m doing involves making candy flavored vodka, that made much more sense to him. I didn’t really follow a particular recipe with this. I used about…
